This Won't Hurt a Bit!

Where have you heard that before? You’re lying in a chair reclined beside a tray of shiny instruments…and you’re wide awake! Yes, this could certainly be the reason for that “get me outta here!” voice that’s screaming inside your head. Are your palms sweaty yet?

The fear of the dentist is real. Perhaps a bad experience as a child, or a dispassionate professional concerned only about moving on to his next patient; whatever the cause, the effect is clear.

Sometimes, we are even our own worst enemy. The anticipation of a dental appointment becomes worse than the appointment itself. The trepidation can be so bad, people dodge their regular dental visits completely. Estimates indicate that “9% to 15% of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear. That's about 30 million to 40 million people”.

Dr. Wang is attuned to this common fear. He is literally a wizard at the “smoke and mirrors” that help distract the most nervous patient; making them feel at ease while minimizing discomfort. A bit of nitrous can go a long way to take the edge off anxiety, watching a movie during the visit is a great diversion, or some discreetly administered pain medication makes a huge difference. And never underestimate the power of compassion!

He wants patients to feel comfortable so their teeth always get the attention they need. To prove his mastery, we asked a patient who was really, really not looking forward to her visit! She not only gave Dr. Wang a 5-star rating, here’s what Kay had to say:

I am in the process of having a tooth prepared for a crown, an experience not unknown to me. I also received a speeding ticket on my way to the office that morning so all in all, I was not having the best start to my day: a speeding ticket and a dental appointment - yikes. However, the staff was pleasant and thorough in explaining what was about to happen, Dr. Wang did his usual wonderful job of making the anesthesia pretty much pain free and I simply leaned back, watched a movie being shown on the screen placed directly above my head, and within an hour was on my way home, with the anesthesia already beginning to wear off. The temporary fits well - in fact, I have to work to remember I have one, and I'll return in approximately two weeks to have the permanent crown affixed. In the meantime, I have to try to stream the movie I was watching because it hadn't concluded by the time I was done.

Whatever your reason, don’t put off visiting us. Don’t hide your feelings either! We want to know. When you call for your appointment tell us your concerns so we can address them when you arrive. That way you can save your sweat for the IRS. Tax season will be here before you know it!
